Malta Archipelago - a Mediterranean Paradise
Malta's best beaches
Positioned perfectly in the very centre of the Mediterranean, the archipelago of Malta is an ideal choice for a beach holiday. Being one of the smallest countries in Europe it means that wherever you stay on this beautiful island you are never far away from its inviting sandy beaches, rocky coves and wide sweeping bays. It`s worth noting that swimming in the sea is only recommended in the summer season, from May to October, but many resorts have lidos too. Here`s just a small selection of the delights that Malta has to offer:-
Ghadira Bay near Mellieha is one of the most popular beaches in Malta. Weekends can be very busy so weekdays are a better time to visit. Its easy access, expansive sands and shallow waters make this a great place to visit with children. As well as great facilities and wide-ranging watersports there a floating play area that you can swim out to.
Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden Bay (two beaches side-by-side), despite their huge popularity are still relatively underdeveloped. They sit in beautiful countryside with stunning scenery and are particularly breathtaking at sunset, when many people enjoy a barbecue on the warm sands as the sun sinks into the night. Golden Bay is the second largest sandy beach on Malta, so there`s plenty of room for playing and there`s a good choice of watersports too with banana boats, paragliding and jet skiing. There`s restaurants and café too, but do note there are steps down to the Ghajn Tuffieha Bay.
Gnejna Bay is nestled on the outskirts of Mgarr on the western coast of Malta. This is perhaps not as picturesque as some beaches, but it certainly makes for a quieter option. Mainly locals visit here and it`s great for families with shallow water and sandy beach. There`s also a region of flat rock ideal for sunbathing on too. More adventurous visitors can try to get to the more secluded beach, accessed by following the rugged walk to the right of the beach, but beware, this walk can be dangerous.
Paceville, St Julians is very close to the town centre, so despite having little facilities actually on the beach itself, it`s close to many amenities. This small rocky beach is in demand for the fascinating reef formations about 200m from shore, so you`ll often find divers here.
Paradise Bay overlooks Cirkewwa right on the north of the island - this is where the ferry leaves for the Maltese island of Gozo. To get to the beach you need to go down numerable steep steps form the car park at the top of the cliff. But this isolated idyllic little beach is well worth it. The views are lovely, particularly at sunset and the sandy beach has excellent facilities and a good range of watersports, such as snorkelling and jet skiing. Its family friendly although there is a reputation for beach parties at the weekend.
Ramla Bay on Gozo is famous in that its sand has a red-golden colour. Many consider this to be the best beach in Malta. It`s easily accessible, parking is on the road leading up to the beach and it`s very family friendly with snack bars, sports and good facilities. The beach is wide giving lots of room, but is can still be busy due to its popularity. San Blas Bay on Gozo is much harder to get too and therefore can guarantee a much more peaceful experience.
Malta`s subtropical Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm dry summers, delightful people and its wide choice of gorgeous beaches mean that holidays there are an enduring favorite.
